Y'know, that's a tough one. Outside converse one star of the collaboration, I'd have to say that the classic Chuck 70 really re-invigorated the Chuck for me in general. As someone who wore Converse a lot as a kid, for them [Converse] to revive the classic execution of the Chuck with this Chuck 70 has been something that's been really exciting for me, bringing a whole new perspective to the shoe itself and re-building that legacy, in my mind. I also really like the UNDERCOVER project. It's not only super wearable, but very true to their brand and how they execute everything.
Y'know, I think the biggest thing in communicating this project is that a lot of the product images show UV light, and a lot of people might not immediately understand what UV-activated means. It's as simple as the sun. All you need is sunlight for these shoes to change colors. That's what's so beautiful about it. You don't need any red converse special tech, you don't have to be able to draw. It's not like we just gave you a box of markers and said "now you have to make your own cool shoe." It's truly packaged with the punch of its special features. No gimmicks necessary. It changes with you. You go to a converse boots music festival, the shoes are all bright and crazy in the sunlight, and the moment you step inside a tent, they go back to their pastel base and are different. That's what's so fun.
Arriving in two sets one a more standard white and the other a burning hot pink the alluring package is one simplistic in all regards as it retains the likeness of their classic cap toe high-top with every feature except for the fabrication left largely the same. Sole units, however, have removed the contrast foxing stripe and prefer a more minimal heel logo, but from the eyestay to converse sale the lateral patch, they are true to form. Grab a detailed look at their see-through glory right below and find them hitting overseas channels later in July.
On the exterior lies a largely traditional template of their cap toe high-top with extra stitching outlining the silhouette of a low; dotted blue lines lie just right above with lateral typography calling for you to "Please cut the BLUE line." Options for customization are aplenty with one able to mix and match they're height preference, constructing themselves a piece almost wholly DIY in aesthetic or one loud in the same ways as the recently released sacai collaborations.
Each pair presents its meaningful symbolism in a different way, with the shimmering Chuck 70 High boasting a design inspired by Pride/trans flags, the Chuck Taylor Ox calling upon rainbow gradient accents, the Chuck Low featuring a sparkling tongue and full rainbow upper, and last but not least the Chuck Low featuring all-over printed bolts. Each is then completed with Pride/trans flag lace tips, "1969-2019" on the back of the tongue, and midsole bumper details. The quartet of shoes is also accompanied by a selection of similarly styled apparel and accessories. Consisting of a classically-styled converse womens camouflage, two animal-printed makeups cheetah and leopard and a simple black/white for those who prefer something a little less flashy, each shoe's upper is dressed in a shaggy and durable pony hair, adding an extra layer of texture to the Chuck 70's classic design. An egret-colored midsole with a black stripe and a brown outsole then arrive on the lower half to round off the look.
